How we build websites - step by step
Building a website is a three step process. This can be done as quickly as you can supply us with content and resources. The whole process typically takes around 4 weeks, but can be completed in as little as three days (see the Woodard Academies website for example).
1. Initial design briefing
During the initial design briefing, we discuss your website likes and dislikes, colour, font and layout preferences and the content you want to include on the site. We will ask you for your logo and any other photos you'd like to incorporate in the design.
2. Content Management System (CMS)
At an agreed point in the process, we will provide you with an administrator log in to the CMS. You will be able to set up any additional users as necessary.
Training
When you first start to use the Content Management System (CMS), you may find it useful for the website administrator to have an orientation session over the telephone. We will introduce the main aspects of the CMS and work through some common tasks together. This can then be passed onto any other users within the school on a cascade basis. We encourage you to try the system for yourself and experiment, but we are always available by telephone or email if you need help.
A training manual will emailed to you and this is also available for download from within the CMS. Video demonstrations of some of the most common tasks can also be viewed here.
3. Providing us with Content
We will populate your site with initial content for you to get you started (up to 25 pages). To know where to put the content we will need to agree a “Site Map” with you. If you already have a website, you may just tell us to replicate your menu & page current structure. If you are starting from scratch, we can provide an excel template which you might find useful.
Content from existing websites
We can normally paste most content from existing websites straight into your new without problems. However, if you have a large number of documents or images on pages we may need to ask for FTP access to your current website to complete this task. We would not normally transfer any image galleries you have, nor any other non-standard features without prior agreement.
New content
We’re quite flexible and you can provide new content to us within emails or Word documents etc. However, we do ask that the page title it is clearly labelled, as well as the menu it should belong to.
Unfortunately, we cannot extract images from Word documents to add them to web pages, so please provide any images which should go alongside any content separately.
If the content is very graphical, we may have to pdf it and add it as a downloadable document.
We will add a couple of images to a couple of galleries to get you started if you would find that helpful.
